Our Founder's Story
Tom Huber and Joel Hassell met at the University of Denver Law School in 1988, graduating in 1992. Over the past 35+ years, they have worked as lawyers and corporate executives at several companies. At Huber Hassell they are dedicated to providing comprehensive and personalized legal solutions, focusing on all aspects of estate planning and business law.

Founding partners Tom Huber and Joel Hassell have distinguished careers marked by significant achievements in both legal practice and corporate leadership.

Tom, with a Master's in International Management from the University of Denver, holds various video engineering patents and a Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award. Additionally, Joel holds an LLM in Wealth Management from Texas A&M University.

Tom Huber
Tom is a founding partner of Huber Hassell, where he focuses on Emerging Technologies, Commercial Transactions, Trusts & Estates, and Patent mining processes.
Tom graduated from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and has been a licensed attorney since 1992. He started his own law firm upon graduation from law school, and his early legal career focused on emerging technology and trial work. Early experience in the courtroom helped frame his perspective on practicing law and counseling clients. His unique combination of computer industry and legal expertise positioned him for his role at Koch Industries, Inc., one of the largest privately held companies in the United States, where he was computer technology Counsel. His in-house work at Koch provided a unique perspective, and Tom references it as being key to forming his approach to business and legal services.
Tom has helped start many new ventures and companies including the role of in-house Counsel at television technology company, Intellocity, Inc., which went from $2M startup to sale for $32M in 13 months in 2002. Tom’s career in the television and advertising technology business continued to flourish, and he has negotiated and closed deals with various entities, resulting in over $ 1 billion US in annual revenue, including The Walt Disney Company, ABC, Fox, CBS, NBCU, AMC, Paramount, A+E Networks, the CW, EPIX, Hallmark Channel, Discovery, Time Warner, STARZ, NFL, Comcast, Charter, Cox and ESPN among others.
Tom holds various video engineering patents and through his work at Canoe Ventures LLC, has a Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).

Joel Hassell
Joel is a founding partner of Huber Hassell, specializing in Estate Planning, Business Law, and Corporate Governance.
Joel earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law and holds an LLM in Wealth Management focusing on estate planning from Texas A&M University. He has been a licensed attorney since 1994. Joel’s extensive experience spans over three decades in the legal and corporate sectors, emphasizing technology and executive leadership.
Before founding Huber Hassell, Joel served as CEO of Canoe Ventures, LLC, where he was instrumental in providing real-time dynamic ad insertion solutions for major cable networks. His tenure at Canoe Ventures allowed him to spearhead significant technological advancements and foster relationships with industry giants like ABC/Disney, NBC Universal, Fox, Paramount, A&E, AMC, and Warner Brothers Discovery. In addition to his executive role at Canoe Ventures, Joel founded and led DigiForge, LLC, a technology firm supporting the U.S. cable industry, which was later acquired by Tivo. His entrepreneurial spirit and leadership were pivotal in the successful growth and eventual acquisition of the company.
Joel’s career is marked by his ability to manage and grow technology-driven enterprises. His achievements include founding Intellocity USA, Inc., which he grew from a startup to a company sold for a significant profit. His strategic insight and technical expertise have earned him recognition, including an Emmy® for Technology and Engineering and being named one of the 100 Power Players by CableFax.
